Messages from the Principal

Literacy Day:  Our January 27 Family Literacy Day was a spectacular success here at HEP.  We had 13 local authors at our school to read books and tell stories to our students.  Many students and staff brought their favorite book and dressed up as their favorite character from that book.  Please see the board's website to view the video created by Richard Thomas that shows the fun and learning that went on that day.

Character Development: All of us want to feel physically and emotionally safe at school.  At Ecole Hepworth Central Public School the staff and students work hard to learn the ten Bluewater Character attributes and we incorporate one of them each month into our curriculum and our day to day work.  December's attribute is Caring.  To develop this attribute, students in the school have the opportunity to contribute to our annual food drive and to raise funds for a school in Liberia.  Our anti-bullying program is tied into everything we do here at HEP.  Students learn by experience how to help each other, solve problems, correct their mistakes and develop lasting friendships with their peers with the guidance of their teachers.  We are working toward creating a community atmosphere in our school where everyone feels welcomed and included.  Please feel free to contact the school if you have questions about our program of Character Development.

Medic Alert - no child without: This is a program of free identification services from the Canadian MedicAlert Foundation for elementary school children age 4-14th birthday.  To enroll your child, call toll-free 1-877-282-5378 Monday to Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. or visit www.nochildwithout.ca.  Quote this bar code 8778521 and pin number 128514.

H1N1 - While some health officials believe the worst is over with the H1N1 virus, others believe that a second wave is coming, likely this fall. Schools will be greatly impacted by any outbreak, whether those affected are students, staff or family members. Even though we can’t predict if the virus will continue to spread, or to what extent, there are steps we can take to prepare for the possibility.
        Recognize the Symptoms
Symptoms of H1N1 flu are similar to seasonal influenza (flu) including headache, chills, cough, fever, sore throat, fatigue, loss of appetite,          muscle aches, runny nose, sneezing, watery eyes and throat irritation. A significant number of people who have been infected with the H1N1 virus have also reported diarrhea and vomiting. In more severe cases, or in people with chronic conditions, complications such as pneumonia may develop. People at higher risk of serious complications include those over 65, children younger than 5, pregnant women, people with chronic medical conditions and those who are immuno suppressed.
What to do to avoid the flu
Flu viruses are spread mainly from person-to-person through coughing or sneezing. Sometimes people may become infected by touching contaminated objects or surfaces with flu viruses on them and then touching their mouth or nose.
- Wash your hands regularly with warm/hot water and soap. Always wash after using the washroom, before and after eating and after sneezing or coughing.~ If soap is not available, use hand sanitizer.
- Wipe down surfaces that people touch regularly (counters, door handles, light switches, keypads, computer equipment, phones, remotes, taps).
- Avoid sharing drinks or foods that have touched someone else’s mouth. Also avoid sharing straws, water bottles, face masks, eyewear or other products that have touched someone else’s eyes, nose or mouth.~
- Wash your hands after you have been in a public place or used public transportation.
- Throw away tissues right after they have been used.~ If you don’t have a tissue, sneeze and cough into your sleeve. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth as germs on your hands spread quickly this way.
- Public health officials recommend getting an annual flu shot.
What to do if you have symptoms Avoid contact with other people as much as possible until you are symptom-free.
- Stay home until you have been symptom-free for at least 24 hours.
- Seek medical care. For most people, the symptoms of H1N1 are mild and do not require any medication, but a physician or other health care provider should make that determination.
